Cheers to the Red, White & Boom!

Well it was a hot one ladies and gentleman! But it was so fun! Typically on this holiday its kind of a toss up if we are in town or not. So it worked perfect this year that we were in town and I could sneak away to Minneapolis early in the am and get in a quick run before the house was even awake!

This was the first year that I ran the Red, White & Boom 5K, and it did not disappoint.

Pre-Race:

I truly believe that all packet pick-ups should be help at a brewery! It made for a great place to meet the gals, pick up our bibs and t-shirts and grab a beer. The location was easy to get to, you did not have to pay for parking, opportunity to purchase additional race swag and who doesn't want to enjoy an ice cold Summit Beer? Parking in Minneapolis can be tricky on any given day. If you choose to park in the various ramps in the area, leave yourself plenty of time. Waiting in line to park in the ramps can set you back 30 plus minutes. I ended up finding a parking spot on the street for free. So if you do not mind walking an additional 3+ blocks I suggest arriving early and taking advantage of the street parking.

Race:

The course was great. Running along the river, and crossing the Stone Arch Bridge to reach the finish is so iconic to that area of Minneapolis. The course did provide some shade, and besides one "hill" as you cross a bridge near the start of the race there really is very little elevation change. The weather was quite hot, and the race did a great job with keeping everyone informed of the course conditions and color codes were posted at aid stations. I do with with the extreme heat that ice or sponges were added to the aid stations. Even though it was just a 5K, I know it surely would have helped to keep everyone cool midway through the short race.

Post-Race:

There really was something for every one in the family at the post-race party. After crossing the Stone Arch Bridge that was lined with American Flags, to get to finish line. You are treated with a host of great food. Burgers, hot dogs, veggie dogs, All-American pops (red, white & blue popsicles), fruit, chips etc. Not many races offer vegetarian options. So that was a major plus. I did hear from a few runner friends that they were not aware that veggie dogs were being offered. So I would suggest possible better signage, and ensuring the volunteers are really vocal about the options. Its such a unique offering post-race meal that it really should be highlighted.

And who doesn't love a great beer? Make sure you have your ID as everyone entering the beer tent area is carded, and given a wristband. You can grab your free beer and then enjoy plenty more as you celebrate with your friends and family. Nothing to complain about being able to enjoy a beer before 8am! Although I do wish they had a few porta pottys in the flagged off beer area, as you were not allowed to take any beer out of that area.

The race is very well run. And while nothing is ever perfect. Twin Cities in Motion seemed as if they thought of nearly everything to make the day the best start to your 4th of July! Misting fans to cool off, games, donut eating contest, vendors galore, great food, ice cold beer, cool treats, nice medal! I would absolutely recommend this race.

What race are you training for next?

Happy Running!
